The disposal swap on our price list is the August job in Annapolis, $265 same day with the unit supplied, labor 100 and the disposal and parts 165. A plug in swap on a clean sink is that job. A hardwired unit adds the electrician for the connection.

What moves the price
- Plug in or hardwired is the first question. Plug in stays with the handyman, hardwired brings the electrician.
- Horsepower sets the parts line. A half horsepower unit covers most kitchens, a three quarter costs more and runs quieter.
- A corroded sink flange or a cracked tailpiece gets replaced while the unit is out, and that is a few dollars of parts, not a second visit.
- A counter with no wall switch needs an air switch or a plug in switch, which is on the estimate when we see it in the photo.

Cost questions
- Why can a handyman install a disposal but not a faucet in Maryland?
- Because the statute says so. Section 8-101(g) names the dishwasher, disposal and icemaker hookup to existing exposed lines as home improvement. A faucet is a plumbing fixture under section 12-101(n), which is plumber work.
- Can I supply my own disposal?
- Yes. Send the model number so we know the mount type. Units from the same maker usually fit the old mount and the swap goes faster.
- Does a disposal swap need a permit?
- A like for like swap on a plug in unit does not in the counties we work. A new circuit or new drain work does, and the electrician or plumber pulls it.
